Prof. Moussa Youdim from the Technion named a member of the German National Academy of Sciences
He also receives a prestigious lifetime achievement award

German academia salutes the developer to the drug Azilect, Prof. Moussa Youdim of the Technion’s Rappaport Faculty of Medicine. He was named an honorary member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and also won a prestigious lifetime achievement award from the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP).

Prof. Youdim developed the drug Azilect for treating Parkinson’s disease together with his colleague Prof. John Finberg. On the decision to award him the prize, it was said that: “Over nearly 50 years, Prof. Youdim has worked and researched in the field of neuropsychopharmacology. He is one of the well-known experts in the world in research on Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. His research over the years has brought about the development of drugs for treating these serious diseases.”

The ECNP was established in Germany in 1987 to encourage divergent research in this field. It brings together scientists from all over the world dealing with the subject for seminars and conferences and publishes a journal.

The German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina is the oldest, German-speaking scientific society with a history spanning more than 350 years. Its main goal is the advancement of world science beyond national borders. Three quarters of its members come from German-speaking countries (Germany, Austria and Switzerland).

Technion President, Prof. Peretz Lavie, congratulated Prof. Youdim, who last week celebrated his 70th birthday, thanked him for the honor he brings to the Technion and wished him many more years of fruitful research in easing the suffering of patients throughout the world.
